Service Opportunities

Service Opps for Confirmation

These are just a few of the options which take place on a regular basis. Check back for more!

We request that an adult either volunteer with each student or that you arrange for them to join another confirmation family attending the event who can get them home or stay with them until they are picked up.

The Gathering

The Gathering is a local nonprofit hunger-relief organization focused primarily on feeding Milwaukee’s hungry and homeless. The Community Meal Programs serve between 80,000-90,000 free meals annually and needs 1,500-2,000 volunteers every year! They also offer assistance with mental health, basic medical and legal issues, along with street supply distributions.

FPLC member Joe Graf has been volunteering at The Gathering for over 30 years! He started bringing his kids to serve meals and then got a group of friends together to form a cooking team. With 30 + years of serving and cooking experience--he's been on their Board--at The Gathering, he has seen hundreds (or more!) FPLC volunteers pitch in to feed our hungry and homeless neighbors.

Due to COVID, The Gathering has changed to a "to go" style format. Each date can accomodate 5 FPLC volunteers who will help prepare, package and distribute lunches. There is plenty of social distancing, masks are required, temperatures are taken and meal guests do not come into the building.

FPLC dates go quickly! Will will have fall dates soon, so check back to register. You are welcome to sign up for other dates The Gathering offers, not just the FPLC dates. Click "The Gathering Home Page" button on this page to register for non-FPLC dates through their website.

Serenity Inns

Dinner Fellowship

Serenity Inn's goal is to provide a safe home for men in Milwaukee to recover from their addiction to either drugs or alcohol. FPLC has worked with Serenity Inns since 2006. Originally, FPLC member Lorraine Buehler found volunteers to bring one meal a month to SI. Within a few short years, we were up to 3 meals/month--more than any church they work with! Volunteers eat with the men (or you may drop dinner off due to COVID-19). They are following COVID-19 protocols if you choose to eat at the Inn.

This is a great activity to do with your middle schooler so they can hear the anti-drug/alcohol message as the men share their stories during the meal. In fact, Lorraine's enthusiasm for SI began because volunteers get to know individuals who are in recovery, (many of whom are ex-offenders), in a meaningful way. Volunteers live the virtue of charity and put a real face to the disease of addiction.

The beauty of dinner fellowship for the residents is they can develop the socialization skills lost during their active addiction.

Peep Academy

Make a Read-Aloud Book Video (or 2)!

All Peoples is creating a small bank of read-aloud videos to use with their younger Peeps Academy children.  They want to include a 15-minute "guest reader" segment in the online mentoring program.  The kids will get to "meet" partners (YOU!) from far and wide!
